What documents do you need to get married in Lake Tahoe?

Lake Tahoe, nestled in the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountains, shares its enchanting beauty between California and Nevada. The majority of Lake Tahoe is situated in eastern California, in El Dorado County, while a smaller portion of the lake’s shoreline extends into western Nevada, primarily in Douglas County. South Lake Tahoe in California and Stateline in Nevada offer charming access points to the lake’s romantic allure, creating an ideal setting for couples to share their special moments.

When figuring out the paperwork and legal requirements of getting married in Lake Tahoe, knowing exactly where you’re getting married is essential because requirements can vary depending on the specific location and jurisdiction. Here are some general guidelines and resources for getting married in Lake Tahoe, but it’s important to check with the particular county or city where you plan to get married for the most up-to-date and detailed information, as requirements may change over time:

California Marriage Licenses

Where to Get Your California Marriage License: When getting married on the California side of Lake Tahoe, you can choose between two types of marriage licenses in California: Regular and Confidential. Both types of licenses are valid anywhere in California and are good for 90 days.

  • Regular Marriage License: This license type is like a public record; you only need one witness.
  • Confidential Marriage License: If you want extra privacy, the Confidential license is the way to go. It’s not a public record, which means you’d need a special court order to get a copy unless you’re one of the people listed on the license. Plus, you don’t need a witness for this one.

To get a California marriage license, both of you must be present and show valid photo identification. You also must be at least 18 years old. If either of you has been divorced within the last 90 days, you’ll need a certified copy of the final dissolution.

You can obtain your marriage license at any California county courthouse. The El Dorado County Clerk’s Office is located at 3368 South Lake Tahoe Blvd. #108, South Lake Tahoe, CA. If you have any questions or need more information, call the El Dorado County Clerk’s Office at 530-573-3409 or visit their website.

Nevada Marriage Licenses

Where to Get Your Nevada Marriage License: To make your Nevada wedding official, you must get your marriage license directly from the county clerk’s office within the state, and regardless of where you get your Nevada license, you can have your ceremony anywhere in the state. Nevada marriage licenses are good for one year.

Both of you need to be present to receive your Nevada marriage license. You must be at least 18 years old and show proof of your age, or 17 years old with valid consent from a parent or legal guardian and the court order authorizing the marriage of a minor. If either of you have been previously divorced, the divorce must be final. You will need to provide the date, city, and state where the divorce occurred.

Here in South Lake Tahoe, you can visit the County Administration Building, South Lake Tahoe Douglas County/Lake Tahoe at 175 Hwy. 50, 2nd Floor, Stateline, NV. You can call them at 775-586-7290 or visit their website. Be sure to complete the Marriage License Application before you make your appointment!

After the ceremony, you must return the signed marriage license to the county clerk’s office to receive your marriage certificate. Remember that Lake Tahoe is a region that spans two states, California and Nevada, so the requirements for marriage licenses can differ between these states. Also, each county within these states may have its own specific regulations and fees. It’s advisable to contact the county clerk’s office within the particular county where you plan to get married in Lake Tahoe to get the most accurate and up-to-date information on the requirements and procedures for obtaining a marriage license in that area.
