7 Unique Ideas for a Lakeside Wedding

Share this:
PinterestFacebookTwitterEmail

Lakeside weddings have been a growing trend over the past few years for several reasons, one of which is the sheer beauty a wedding on the shore brings to your joyous day. And lakeside weddings in Tahoe South are over-the-top beautiful. News flash: Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Not only is it surrounded by the majestic Sierra Mountains and towering, fragrant pine and cedar trees, its crystal clear, blue-green-turquoise water is second to none. So, pick a venue with a private beach (see: Edgewood Tahoe, Beach Retreat & Lodge at Tahoe, Zephyr Cove Resort, The Landing), or a wooden pier, or a grassy lawn and start planning the lakeside wedding of your dreams. Since we host thousands of weddings in Tahoe South, we’ll give you a few of our favorite ideas to incorporate into your own lakeside wedding:

A lakeside wedding with cocktail hour in a boathouse

Kick off your wedding festivities with a swanky cocktail hour in a boathouse on the lake. Work with your wedding coordinator to design a special drink menu and apps to offer guests. Beach Retreat & Lodge at Tahoe has just the setting to pull this off with The Boathouse, situated along Lake Tahoe’s south shore.

Pick a beautiful beach for your lakeside wedding ceremony

What would a lakeside wedding be without a little sand between your toes? The Lake Tahoe shoreline offers a one-of-a-kind mix of sandy beaches, ginormous boulders, and of course, the signature turquoise waters encircled by majestic mountains. Set up rows of traditional chairs for guests or come up with something truly unique that speaks to your relationship or plays on your wedding theme.

Exchange vows on a dock or pier

While the beach is a no-brainer for a lakeside wedding, you could also avoid the sand and set foot on a dock or pier and say your “I Dos.” One of the unique aspects of a lakeside wedding is all the beautiful shoreline choices for your ceremony, so feel free to think outside the beach.

Say “I Do” aboard a giant boat

One of the more novel advantages to having a lakeside wedding is that you could actually get married on a boat. In Tahoe South, Lake Tahoe Cruises will whisk you and your guests off into the sunset aboard one of their sea-worthy vessels. If vintage is your vibe, check out the M.S. Dixie II paddle wheeler. If posh and intimate is your preference, they also have a luxurious yacht called Tahoe Paradise. Both boats are year-round options for a lakeside wedding in Tahoe South.

After your lakeside wedding, go jump in the lake

We’ve seen many wedding couples get wet and wild after the ceremony with a “lover’s leap” into the lake. The choice is yours whether to christen your formal attire or switch to more water-worthy apparel, but it’s a great photo op and can add some excitement and thrill to your day. (And we hear that jumping into Lake Tahoe can be very invigorating!)

Make your grand departure on a stand-up paddleboard

In Tahoe South, we do it up big. Okay, so it doesn’t have to be a SUP; it could be a canoe, kayak, jet-ski, powerboat, or pontoon, but what better way to exit your lakeside wedding than via watercraft? It makes for a fantastic photo, plus it’s super fun!

Take all the sunset photos

Gauging by the millions of people who post sunset pics on Instagram, we know it’s a favorite photo subject. And we can confidently say that Lake Tahoe has some of the most breathtaking sunsets. So, why not time your wedding festivities to align with one-of-a-kind sunset photo ops? (Note: We could honestly post dozens of amazing sunset shots at lakeside weddings, but we’ve narrowed it down to just a few. But we think you’ll get the idea.)

Have Your Wedding on a Boat in Lake Tahoe

One of the most incredible ways to experience Lake Tahoe is from out on the lake itself. Hosting your wedding ceremony or reception on a boat is a great way to share the beauty of the surrounding area with your wedding guests. Lake Tahoe Cruises operates the MS Dixie II paddle wheeler and Tahoe Paradise yacht, two year-round options for unique Lake Tahoe wedding venues. The MS Dixie II hosts up to 300 guests, whereas the smaller, more intimate Tahoe Paradise yacht is perfect for up to 60 guests. Plus, your ceremony on board Tahoe Paradise offers a uniformed captain to preside.

There is something so peaceful and romantic about exchanging your wedding vows while floating out on the water. From an intimate gathering with closest family and friends to a larger celebration, the staff at Lake Tahoe Cruises is a unique option to make your wedding on the water memorable.

And if you’re planning a winter wedding in Tahoe, ceremonies can be held inside the cozy restaurant, with its large stone fireplace and cozy cabin-like atmosphere. (Tip: Be sure to check out their Winter Wedding Planner for special winter wedding packages from November to April.) Offering innovative menus and seasonal cuisine crafted with sustainable and locally sourced food, Zephyr Cove Restaurant is also a prime choice for a rehearsal dinner or a wedding day breakfast or brunch.

It’s true, Tahoe is magnificent any time of year for a destination wedding. And having an outdoor wedding in Tahoe is probably the best it can get, what with its majestic mountains, towering pines, and azure blue, crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe. But planning for an outdoor wedding in Tahoe can be tough with Mother Nature calling the shots. (As if you need another mother to contend with, amiright?) Rest easy. The wedding professionals at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel can alleviate that concern by offering back-up event space in the case of inclement weather on your wedding day. Check out these amazing outdoor (and indoor) event spaces to choose from at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

There is nothing quite like the fresh mountain air in your hair and that backdrop, though. If your guest list is a bit bigger, check out the Pool Patio outdoor wedding space, which can accommodate 100 guests for a ceremony, 80 for a banquet and up to 50 for a ceremony and reception and features awe-inspiring views.

Save Money With an Eco-Friendly Wedding

According to TheKnot.com, the average cost of a wedding in the U.S. was $32,641 in 2015. (Unless you got married in Manhattan, in which case you’re looking at $82,299.) One way to cut wedding costs is to think about how you can recycle, reduce, and reuse on your big day. Your pocketbook (read: parents) will thank you, and so will Mother Nature. Here are a few eco-friendly wedding ideas to consider:

Eco-Friendly Wedding Venue

Reduce energy usage by having an outdoor wedding ceremony, where you can use the natural light of the sun instead of relying on electricity indoors.

Reduce carbon emissions by holding your ceremony and reception in the same venue to avoid guests’ need to travel from one venue to another.

If an outdoor wedding is simply not an option, plan a daytime event inside an eco-friendly wedding venue with ample natural light to eliminate or reduce energy usage during your event. You can also use the soft lighting of candles around the room to save energy and also create a romantic ambiance.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Stationery

Reuse invitations and programs by choosing to print them on plantable paper. After your wedding, guests can plant them in soil (instead of throwing them away) and then enjoy the flowers, plants, or herbs produced by the seeds embedded within the paper fibers.

Reduce the use of paper and ink and create a wedding website with complete event information, eliminating the need for additional inserts included with your invitation.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Flowers and Centerpieces

Reduce the need for distribution and long-term refrigeration by choosing in-season, locally-grown flowers for the bouquets at your eco-friendly wedding.

Recycle your beautiful wedding flowers by donating them to Repeat Roses, a service that delivers them to hospitals, hospice care, cancer treatment centers, nursing homes, and women’s shelters.

Reuse other creative materials to create bouquets — think silk flowers and greenery, brooches or other jewelry, buttons, feathers, pine cones, Christmas ornaments, or origami.

For centerpieces, choose items that you can reuse after your reception, or items that guests can take home as party favors. For example, soy or honeycomb candles, pine cones, or potted plants, like succulents, orchids, primroses, African violets, or herbs are great alternatives for your eco-friendly wedding.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Dresses

Recycle and reuse by choosing an heirloom dress and hiring a seamstress to implement whatever modifications you desire to make it your own.

Reuse by buying your dress at a vintage boutique.

Reuse by shopping online stores that sell previously worn wedding dresses.

Why buy when you can rent? Look for an online wedding gown and bridesmaid dress rental store and save money by renting existing dresses instead of buying ones that are brand new. (Even the guys can rent their attire!)

Bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses are now available for rent online, as well as purchasing previously-worn dresses -- a great eco-friendly way to save money and help the environment by reusing. Photo courtesy of Beach Retreat & Lodge at Tahoe.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Favors

A unique, philanthropic, and “green” party favor is donating to your favorite charity in lieu of purchasing party favors, or give guests a choice of charity from a select few.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Escort Cards

Instead of printing an escort card for each guest, telling them at which table they should sit, assign a friend or family member the role of guiding guests to their table (based on a list you provide). This is not only more environmentally friendly, but also adds a personal touch for arriving guests.
